In this ‘Home Recreation Guide,’ I dive into 5 domains of wellness and talk about different recreation activities that are fulfilling to each domain. In this post, I will be sharing about spiritual wellness.

Spirituality, is often tied to a religion, and what is the true definition of it?
Spiritual wellness can be described as your values and beliefs that contribute to your purpose in life. Spirituality can be practiced in a wide variety of ways, including but not limited to religion. Signs of strong spirituality include a sense of self-confidence, a feeling of inner peace, and having clear values.
I want this to be an invitation to practice and recognize your spirituality and in no means guide you to a specific religion.
I personally didn't put much energy towards my 'spirituality' until last year. Now, I recognize the importance of it and the importance of connecting with yourself and what you believe in.
My Seven Recommendations:
1. Practice Meditation
There is a common misconception that meditation is tied to specific religions. Whereas, meditation is a way to connect deeper with yourself and recognize your emotions and pain that you may have previously overlooked which can be beneficial to all of us.

There are various forms of meditation, this article lists out a few types and shares how to meditate, the benefits, and has guided meditation built-in to the page.
2. Practice Spirituality In A Way that Aligns with You
One of the big pillars of Recreation Therapy is creating things that are individual to each person, religion is a great example of this. It is important to practice what is right for you, and recognize that what is right for you may be different for others.
Open Culture offers a wide variety of free online religion courses. This can provide you with a different way to appreciate your religion and learn more about it.
Psychology Today talks about religion and explains the overarching concept and shares about the difference between spirituality and religion. This Insight explains spirituality as a belief and religion as a cluster of beliefs. So to further this, just because you may not follow a specific religion doesn't mean you can't practice spirituality.
3. Create a Gratitude Journal

As explained in a prior blog, gratitude is important and beneficial. Gratitude is not tied to one specific religion, everyone can be grateful and has the ability to become more aware of the things around them they can be grateful for.
To gratitude journal is to recognize the things in your life you can be grateful for.
4. Self-Reflection
Often after we complete something and move on, not fully recognizing the lessons learned. A beneficial practice that can be applied across various parts of your life is to complete a self-reflection. This may be a reflection of a project, job, career, trip, or a relationship and is asking yourself questions such as; what did I learn from this? Did I achieve what I wished I would? How did it make me feel? What is something I could change moving forward?
The interesting thing about self-reflection is recognizing how we are constantly growing and learning new insights and if we take time to savor these we may gain further insight from them.
Why should you practice self-reflection? Well, there are various benefits such as; improved awareness of self, gained clarity, increased awareness, and retention of learned material.
Mindfulness is to be fully aware of the present moment, allowing for acceptance and non-judgment. Allowing ones' thoughts to flow through you, not holding onto you. By being mindful we can bring awareness to our internal and external feelings and the interplay between them.
